1. [Madhyamik Examination – 2017]

Use the following flow-chart to write a paragraph (in about 100 words) on the preparation of a mixture useful for rehydration or maintaining balance of water in the body:

[Wash hands, pots, spoons, glass → boil one litre water in pot → cool → add six level teaspoons of sugar + half teaspoon of common salt → stir well → ready]

Ans : - 

An oral rehydration mixture is very useful for maintaining the balance of water in the body. The ingredients needed are clean water, sugar and common salt along with clean utensils like a pot, spoon and glass. At first, the hands, pots, spoons and glass are washed properly to ensure hygiene. Then one litre of water is boiled in a pot and allowed to cool. After that, six level teaspoons of sugar and half a teaspoon of common salt are added to the cooled water. The mixture is stirred well until the sugar and salt dissolve completely. Finally, the rehydration drink is ready for use.

2. [Madhyamik Examination – 2005]

The flow chart below is about the ‘preparation of mustard oil’. Use the flow chart and describe the process in about 100 words:

[Seeds collected → dried → crushed in a machine → a little water added → oil extracted → oil-cakes separated → oil kept in containers → sealed → ready for use and sale]

Ans : - 

Mustard oil is prepared through a simple but systematic process. At first, mustard seeds are collected from the fields and then dried properly in the sun. Next, the dried seeds are crushed in a machine. After that, a little water is added to the crushed seeds to help in extracting the oil. Then the oil is extracted from the mixture. The oil-cakes are separated from the oil. After separation, the pure oil is kept in clean containers. Finally, the containers are sealed properly. Thus, mustard oil is made ready for use and sale in the market.

Study the following flow chart and describe ‘How bread is made’. Write the answer in about 80 words, using linkers. Begin like this: Bread is made up of four ingredients…

[Flour, salt, yeast, water weighed → mixed up → dough prepared → cut into pieces → rolled and shaped → baked for 20–30 minutes → sliced → wrapped in paper → ready for the market]

Bread is made up of four ingredients—flour, salt, yeast and water. At first, these ingredients are weighed properly and then mixed together. Next, a soft dough is prepared from the mixture. After that, the dough is cut into pieces, which are then rolled and shaped carefully. Then the shaped pieces are baked in an oven for about 20 to 30 minutes until they become soft and brown. After baking, the bread is sliced into pieces. Finally, the slices are wrapped in paper and made ready for the market. Thus, fresh bread is prepared and supplied for daily consumption.

Use the following flow chart to describe ‘how tea is prepared’. Make use of linkers to tie up your sentences:

Then sugar and milk are added according to taste and the mixture is stirred well with a teaspoon. Finally, the tea is poured into cups and served hot. Thus, a delicious cup of tea is ready to be enjoyed.

5. [Madhyamik Examination – 1994]

Use the following flow chart to write a paragraph describing ‘how hand-made paper is made ready for market’:

[Collect rags/torn clothes → beat into pulp → spread and lift in fine wire-net trays → drain excess water → overturn on blanket → cut into small pieces → wash and clean → soak in bleach (3–4 days) → dry in sun or heating chamber → lift paper from blanket → dip in liquid gum → dry again → pack → ready for market]

Ans : - Hand-made paper is prepared from rags or torn clothes through a systematic process. At first, rags or torn clothes are collected and beaten into pulp. Then the pulp is spread and lifted in fine wire-net trays, and the excess water is drained out. After that, it is overturned on a blanket and cut into small pieces. These pieces are washed and cleaned properly and then soaked in bleach for three to four days. Next, the pulp is dried in the sun or in a heating chamber. After drying, the paper is lifted from the blanket and dipped in liquid gum. It is dried again and finally packed. Thus, hand-made paper is made ready for the market.

The flow chart is about the preparation of a mixture useful for rehydration or removing shortage of water in the body. It is also useful for curing diarrhoea. Use the flow chart and describe the process in about 80 words:

[Clean hands, pots, teaspoon, tablespoon, cup → pour one litre boiled and cooled water in a pot → sugar or honey: 2 tablespoons → ordinary salt: 1/4 teaspoon → orange juice: 1/2 cup or lemon juice: a few drops → edible soda: 1/4 teaspoonful → stir well → ready]

The ingredients required are clean water, sugar or honey, salt, orange or lemon juice and a little edible soda. [Press reporters collect news + press photographers take pictures → news sorted and edited → types set in machines → paper rolls inserted → news printed → folded and cut → newspapers ready for distribution → delivered home]

Ans : - 

Newspapers are produced through a well-organised and systematic process. At first, press reporters collect news from different places while press photographers take relevant pictures. Then the collected news is sorted and carefully edited. After that, the edited news is set in machines for printing. Large rolls of paper are inserted into the printing machines and the news is printed on them. Next, the printed sheets are folded and cut into proper sizes. The newspapers are then made ready for distribution. Finally, they are delivered to homes and different places for readers. Thus, newspapers reach us every day with fresh news and information.

8. Study the following flow chart. It tells you ‘how chilli chicken is produced’. Write a paragraph in about 100 words describing the process. Have an introductory sentence:

[Wash chicken pieces thoroughly—marinate—make batter—dip marinated chicken pieces in batter—deep fry—dice vegetables and fry in pan—prepare  gravy—add fried chicken to gravy and stir well—chilli chicken ready.]

Ans : - 

Chilli chicken is a mouth-watering Chinese dish. The ingredients are boneless chicken pieces,  eggs, onions, capsicum, green chillies, ginger, garlic, soya sauce, cornflour, oil, ajinomoto, salt and pepper. At first, the chicken pieces are washed thoroughly and marinated with vinegar, soya sauce and salt. A pinch of cornflour is added to the white of two eggs to make batter. The marinated chicken pieces are dipped in it and deep fried in oil. Next, onions, capsicum, green chillies, ginger and garlic are diced and fried. Then soya sauce, ajinomoto land water are added to them. In this gravy, the fried chicken pieces are added and stirred well. Finally, chilli chicken is ready.
