The next year the war came, in
which I was engaged for five years. With the war behind me, I had a great desire
to breathe a little pure air, and I set out again along the trail through that
deserted country. The land had not changed. Ever since the day before, I had
been thinking about the shepherd who planted trees. Ten thousand oaks, I had
said to myself, must really take up a lot of space.
When I met Elzéard Bouffier
this time, I found that the war had not disturbed him at all. He had continued
planting. The oaks of 1910 were now ten years old and were taller than me and
then him. The scene was impressive. I was actually speechless and we passed the
whole day in silence, walking through his forest. It was in three sections,
eleven kilometers long overall and, at its widest point, three kilometers wide.
When I considered that had all sprung from the hands and from the soul of this
one man- without technical aids – it struck me that men could be as effective
as God in domains other than destruction.

3. Read the following text and
answer the questions below:
As wildfires raged at both
ends of California, officials released another grim statistic; six more dead in
a swath of Northern California wiped out by fire, raising the death toll there
to 29. It matched California's record for deaths in a single fire and brought
the state wide total to 31. Another 228 remain unaccounted for as crew stepped
up the search for bodies and missing people. Two people were killed in a
wildfire in Southern California. The search teams were working in Paradise - a
town of 27,000 that was largely incinerated last week and in surrounding
communities in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Authorities called in a DNA lab and
teams of anthropologists to help identify victims. State wide, 150,000 remained
displaced as more than 8,000 fire crew battled wildfires that have scorched 400
square miles (1,040 square km), with out-of-state crew continuing to arrive.
Whipping winds and tinder-dry conditions threaten more areas through the rest
of the week, fire officials warned. "This is truly a tragedy that all
Californians can understand and respond to," said the government.
Jerry Brown said at a press
briefing, "It's a time to pull together and work through these
tragedies." Brown, who has declared a state emergency, said California is
requesting aid from the Trump administration. President Donald Trump has blamed
'poor' forest management for the fires. Brown said federal and state government
must do more forest management but that climate change is the greater source of
the problem. Drought and warmer weather and the building of homes deeper into
forests have led to more destructive wildfire seasons. While California
officially emerged from a five-year drought last year, much of the northern
part of the state is abnormally dry.

Title: The Lion and the Mouse
Once, a lion was sleeping when
a mouse accidentally disturbed him. The angry lion was about to kill the mouse,
but the mouse pleaded for mercy and promised to help him someday. The lion let
it go. Later, the lion got trapped in a hunter's net. Hearing his roar, the
mouse came and gnawed the net, freeing the lion. The lion thanked the mouse,
